Domain Name Registration
A domain name is basically your address on the internet. Domain names have two parts: the label and the extension (or top-level domain), separated by a 'dot.' There are over 20 TLD's (Top Level Domains) to choose from. Popular choices such as .com and .net are typically used by for-profit companies. There are also various country specific TLD's such as .ca for Canadian websites.
Your domain name selection is entirely in your hands! However, since many domain names are already taken by others, we may have to get creative. The key is to find an available domain name that is easy for people to remember.
Once you have registered a domain name, it effectively belongs to you. Even if you're not quite ready to build your site, you can register and hold a domain name. It's a good idea to get your domain as quickly as possible. This will reserve it for your use until you have built your site and are ready to launch it.
To register or renew a .ca domain name, you must contact a CIRA certified registrar. For a list of certified registrars, click here.
To register or renew other common domain names such as .com, we suggest you contact an ICANN accredited registrar. For a list of accredited registrars, click here.
